The Best Marathon Training Schedule

Determining a good marathon training schedule and sticking to it can be difficult. The terrible temptations are strong, and they are many. It's way too tempting to eat that whole chocolate in one sitting. (I know.) It's much too tempting to lay around in bed all day on Saturday, never once getting up unless you have to go to the bathroom. (I know.)

Since I am now the voice of experience, I can give you some tips on what you SHOULDN'T do so that you'll successfully stick with your schedule. It's very important to remember a few things after you've determined your marathon training schedule.

- Running very quickly for three minutes does not substitute jogging for thirty minutes. You will actually need to do the jogging that you've outlined on your schedule.

- Get creative and involve your family when you can't find the motivation to run every weekend for three months. Here's what I did. My husband dangled a snickers bar out the window of the car while he drove three feet in front of me.

- When you break in your jogging shoes for the marathon, that means putting them on and running with them. Please put away the meat mallet now.

- 'Choosing a running partner' means a human, and not a bottle of Jack Daniels.

- Sticking to your marathon training schedule does not involve taping the paper to your rear end.

- Resist the temptation to hitchhike when you're jogging those last three miles back home.

- Taking naps in ditches off the side of the road isn't just a bad idea, and it's really unsanitary.

Here's another trick for finding the motivation you need to stick with your training schedule: Imagine the faces of your competitors when you finish first place. Picture them sobbing, screaming, and yelling; pretend to be modest as you're thinking, "No autographs please, just bask in the glow of the champion!" Have fun with your marathon!"
