The Future of Video Game Reviews

By: The Marquis1

Since the young days of Console Gaming, when the playground was full of adoration for the graphical prowess of Asteroids on the Atari, and I stayed up all night playing Rainbow Island on my Amstrad CPC, the influence of independent reviews on the game buying public has been immense.

Sure, some games (movie franchises for example) will sell no matter how dire they are, but for the main, the only Console games that sell well are good Console games. And how do the public discover if a game is good or not? By reading video game reviews.

The role of the independent printed word in video game industry has always been huge. From console specific publications, to articles in newspapers and trusted magazines, a few good reviews of any game should be enough to kickstart a successful run of sales. (The RPG Fallout was released with very little advertising or PR but sold hugely on the back of critical applause from respected names in the video games field)

But what about now? In this up-to-the-minute world of Goodle and Blogs and Youtubes, anyone can write a review. Anyone can express their opinion by writing about it, or even better, by creating a 'video-review' and posting it on Youtube. Not only has the internet revolution provided people with an easy opportunity to have their say, it has removed all of the usual barriers to getting your voice heard by the masses.

In the old days, you needed to write for a well-respected magazine or newspaper or television station if you wanted your review to have any impact at all. Nowadays, just post it on Youtube, and if its good enough, people will see it, listen to it, and be persuaded by what you have to say.

The barriers to anybody having their say have been completely removed. If you needed a magazine with a readership of thousands before, today there is only one criteria: Be Great.

And how are people reacting to this reform They are offering their opinions like never before! Websites like www.swiish.com are devoted to video footage relating to a particular video game console (The Nintendo Wii in this example). People visit swiish.com knowing that it has a huge library of Nintendo Videos. There, they can search for the Nintendo Wii game they are hoping to purchase, and watch informative videos, recorded by real people, giving real and honest opinions on Wii games.

So, if the future of Console game reviews lies in the hands of the general community what does this mean for the companies who spend billions developing and producing games. Well, it means the same for them as it does for everybody: The only way to be successful is to be good. Be Great. Because if you try to sell us a lemon, we're all just a click away from telling the whole world.
