The Limits to Digital Hearing Aid Usefulness

Hearing instruments will never completely make-up for hearing loss and some instruments serve individual clients better than other instruments. Today's hearing instruments come in a variety of prices, sizes, and technologies. You should make your selection to match your hearing and lifestyle needs.

All conventional hearing instruments include a microphone, an amplifier, a receiver (speaker) and a volume control. At one time, hearing instruments were bulky and uncomfortable to wear, but those days are now long gone. Nevertheless, the hearing imparied will never hear as well as they did when young, with or without hearing instruments. At one time, the only hearing aids available were large and cumbersome and uncomfortable to wear. The current designs of hearing instruments, are those that fit fully in the canal (CIC).

There are two most popular hearing aid technologies; ‘Analog’ were the original type, and the more modern ‘digital’ type. Digital hearing aids are programmable hearing instruments with digital circuits. However, no currently available hearing aid system will replace your hearing completely, so think about your needs and your budget with care, and don't expect the unachievable from the aid you choose.

Conventional and programmable hearing aids differ in the amount and extent of adjustments the hearing aid sales technician can carry out on the audio device. People who own programmable hearing instruments do not have to go without their devices as frequently as those who do not have programmable instruments. Analog hearing aids are slowly being phased out.

There are many digital hearing instruments available from various aid suppliers, each with different advantages and disadvantages. But you will need to think about whether hearing instruments will help you to gain comprehension in a group of talking people. Often it can be just a case of hearing but not comprehending the words. Take qualified advice about this in advance of purchase of the more costly devices, as for some of the hearing impaired they will not be able to comprehend what is said even with the clearest hearing device. There is qualitative and quantitative evidence that digital instruments outperform analog hearing devices. The advent of programmable hearing instruments has led to new solutions to some old problems.

There are many programmable hearing instruments which use advanced circuits, but are not fully digital, so take care you check the difference before you decide to become an owner.

A new hearing aid can be a disorienting experience. You might encounter problems while adjusting to a new hearing device. But, generally this is only transient and things soon settle down and of little if any concern when the possible benefits are considered.

Using hearing instruments does require you to learn how to use the technology, and undertake some experimentation. They will not restore normal hearing, nor will they eliminate background noise. Each individual's hearing loss presents unique characteristics so take care to interact with your hearing expert so that both of you have addressed all the issues and understand the best compromise solution, which is best for you.
