The Power Of Viral Marketing

By: Christina Lang

Viral marketing is a concept used to pass on a marketing message to others, while creating a potentially exponential growth in the message's visibility. It's an amazing method of generating traffic and leads but also acts as a great pre seller of products and a very cost effective way of getting ongoing traffic to a website. Viral marketing is widely touted as the new way to increase market penetration and build brand awareness in the Internet space. This is genius and quite valuable for many marketers that rely on the internet for a full time income.

Viral Marketing is all about information, and the information has got to be good. The idea behind this advertising method is that you include your ad with the freebie people giveaway or use. The ability to use viral marketing can help you create a niche for yourself in an otherwise saturated market. I believe there are characteristics that can increase an idea's chance of going viral, and most of them have more to do with good communication than a good idea. Email was the original viral marketing strategy because the medium encouraged forwarding messages to more people.

These days viral video campaigns are one of the most common types and have driven sites like Youtube from obscurity into billion dollar businesses. The core concept of video marketing on YouTube is to harness the power of the site's traffic. Viral promotions may take the form of video clips, interactive Flash games, advergames, ebooks, brandable software, images, or even text messages. The whole "viral marketing" thing got people excited because it uses the Internet to cheaply spread crap like Burger King videos or Hotmail invitations. It has seemingly sprouted an entire industry dealing with shocking or extreme video designed to ring up "hits" on YouTube. If you want a truly viral video that will get millions of people to watch and share it, then yes, content is key. So a video must have a decent concept, but one shouldn't agonize over determining the best "viral" video possible. Here are some guidelines we follow: Make it short: 15-30 seconds is ideal; break down long stories into bite-sized clips. Design for remixing: create a video that is simple enough to be remixed over and over again by others.

Another way to go viral is writing and publishing articles. Articles are one of the best online marketing investments you can make because you write them once and they send you instant visitors each. Also, for any article you have written that's published on your own website, be sure to provide instructions for people that may want to reprint it.

Hopefully this has given you some ideas to help start your viral marketing campaign. Your campaigns both online and off are especially important to small businesses and start-ups because they usually cost almost nothing. The real investment in getting a viral marketing campaign going is the time and effort that it takes to build a product worth talking about. Viral marketing is SO important today on all fronts. This type of marketing is going to be with us now in different forms for as long as word of mouth exists so let's embrace it.
