The Real Pinay Scandal

By: Zigfred Diaz

Some veteran Filipino bloggers reveals in their blogs that one way of increasing traffic is to write a post entitled "Pinay scandal" Once the post becomes popular enough it will probably make it to the top ten in google. Most likely there will be a good (should I say "evil" number?) of people who are looking for ponography in the internet that will be misled to your blog or site.

Sex sells. That is why using the Pinay Scandal word in a blog or website is sure to drive a number of visitors to your blog or website. "Pinay scandals" sites are known to contain pornographic materials featuring Filipinas.

The real pinay scandal is not that sexually depraved people are searching for pornography in the internet. Let me tell you what the real pinay scandal is. It is the continued trafficking, prostitution and abuse of Filipino children and women.

In order to fully prove my point, the following data will help you understand what I am talking about.

1.) TRAFFICKING OF WOMEN AND CHILDREN

There are 150,000 Filipina women that are trafficked into prostitution in Japan as reported in the July 2, 1998 issue of the Daily Star. Some of them were sold allegedly sold to the Yakuza for $2,400.00 to $ 18,000.00. A news item that appeared in the May 31, 1995 of the Manila Chronicle reports that 150 Filipinas were sold into prostitution for $5,000.00 each by international syndicates to night club operators in some African countries particularly Nigeria.

Out 3,776 reported cases 492 cases of child abuse involves pornography, prostitution, paedophilia and trafficking according to the Department of Social Welfare and Development of the Philippines. There were 8,335 cases of child abuse from 1991-1996. About 96% of the victims were females.

2.) FORCED PROSTITUTION OF WOMEN AND CHILDREN

Study shows that there are about 75,000 children in the Philippines who were forced into prostitution because of poverty. This was reported in the August 18, 1998 of Kyodo News.

The February 25, 1998 issue of TODAY reports that there are 400,000 women in prostitution in 1998. This excludes unregistered, seasonal prostitutes, overseas entertainers and victims of external trafficking. One fourth of them are children. Each year 3,266 more children are forced into the sex industry.

Sol F. Juvida's intensive study entitled "Philippines - Children: Scourge of Child Prostitution" reveals some shattering facts. Her study reveals that the Philippines is fourth among 9 nations with the most children in prostitution an estimated 60,000 to 100,000. In Angeles City alone about 75% of the estimated 500 prostitutes in an area known for child prostitution in Angeles City are children. More than 20 years ago there were only 7 provinces with child sex rings. Now there are 37 provinces with child sex rings.

According to the November 21, 1997 issue of the Indian Express, the Philippines is one of the favored destinations of pedophile sex tourists from Europe and the United States.

InterPress Service in its October 12, 1997 issue tells of the horrific story of a 13 year old girl named Sharon. She was kidnapped and sold as a virgin for US$30. While she was in a brothel, she was abused by 8 to 15 men every night. This suffering continued even when she was sick or had her menstrual period. Fortunately she escaped with a customer's help. By that time more than 1,500 men had already abused her.

The sad thing about this is that there is "no evidence" that children in prostitution can ever rehabilitate. This traumatic experience will be borne by them forever in life. EPCAT (End Child Prostitution, Child Pornography and Trafficking of Children for Sexual Purposes) coordinator Ron O'Grady says that "Few children rescued from brothels have been able to begin living anything like a healthy life again. " In an international conference Ron O'Grady says ''The ultimate solution to the problem lies in changing human attitudes and human values'' Not only is the real pinay scandal the continuation of all of these horrific activities. The ultimate pinay scandal is the failure of society to change their attitudes towards these problems and to do something about it.
