The Shocking Truth About How Over-Use Of Antibiotics Is Bad For You

By: celia

Because of the over-use of antibiotics in farming people and pigs are dying daily. The antibiotic resistant bacteria Extended Spectrum Beta Lactamase - ESBL- is killing both humans and pigs.

The number of deaths has increased with patients suffering from cancer and liver problems.

The bacteria is passed on to humans through pigs health officials says. The increased use of antibiotics through agriculture may be the cause

ESBLs or Extended-Spectrum Beta Lactamase are actually enzymes produced by certain kinds of bacteria.

Extended-Spectrum beta Lactamase were found in the 1980’s. Very few people were affected by this back then.

Things have changed since the 1980's. A new class of ESBL have emerged says the British Health Protection Agency.

People are now beginning to be affected by these mutated bacteria. It is beginning to be a problem for our health providers.

In October 2007 the Journal of American Medical association published a study that 100,000 cases were recorded of invasive resistant bacteria infections

In the USA deaths from HIV/AIDS accounted for 17,000 people in 2005. In the same year 18,600 lost their life from infections that were resistant to antibiotics.

An outbreak of infections in schools and the publishing of the report got some attention. Apart from agreeing that there is an overuse of antibiotics and proper hygiene need to be adhere to, very little was done about this problem.

Very little is been said or done about use of antibiotics in agriculture. This is the major source of human antibiotics consumption and accounts for the resistance seen today.

ESBLs are being traced back to food production and in particularly, pigs.

These animals are fed on antibiotics to prevent disease and promote growth.

Animals that get antibiotics in their feed gain more body weight. But in the end, it is us the consumers who pays the high price not only in the shop but with our health.

Lettuce, corn and potatoes grown in soil with manure from animals fed on antibiotics were contaminated. Chicken is another tainted meat as they too are fed antibiotics.

Let your local farmer know what you think.

Grass fed beef is best. They are very rarely fed antibiotics.

Try to eat natural foods. Grow your own if possible.
