The Story Behind Honda ATVs

By: Billie Goodrich

Honda was one of the very first manufacturers to build an all terrain vehicle. It all started in 1967 when a group of Honda engineers, led by Osamu Takeuchi, worked to provide a new recreational vehicle that is not similar to any other vehicles produced. The result was the Honda US90 ATV.

Developing the idea for a Honda ATV involved a number of components, wherein the group of engineers considered building a two-, four- and six-wheeled configuration. After many design hours, the engineers settled on a vehicle with three wheels because it provided them with a configuration that was best suited for the vehicle as they saw it.

The US90 was the first Honda ATV in world. With a seven horsepower engine, a four-speed gearbox, and an automatic clutch, people could snap up this new kind of vehicle for around six hundred dollars. The US90's ability to drive effortlessly on sand and snow with its wide tires made it a popular choice with farmers. However, by the end of 1970s, people started using the earlier Honda ATV models for recreational purposes.

At the start of 1980s, both utility and sports ATV had a major boom in the market. Farmers are still using the utility models by this time. The 1980s were dominated by the Honda ATC185, a powerful ATV with an automatic clutch, five speed gearbox, and a 180cc engine.

Capturing the budding sports ATV market was important to Honda, and in 1982 they launched the Honda ATC200E. It was a powerful vehicle with a 192cc engine and a 4-speed, dual range gearbox that produced more power, compared to its utility model counterpart. The durability of the ATC200E was improved by Honda in 1984 when they designed a new drive chain, and also added a reverse gear.

From 1980s onwards, Honda ATVs are used for racing everywhere from desert roads to frozen lakes all over America. Honda as a company is well known for its performance cars and motorcycles, and their ATVs do not disappoint.

During later years, Honda switched their ATV design from three wheels to four wheels for the even greater stability. They released a better version in four-wheel, allowing better suspension and a more powerful engine.

Honda ATVs are known to revolutionize the world of all-terrain vehicles for both sports and utility purposes. Famous models from Honda include the four-wheel TRX200, the 1988 FourTrax 300, the 1995 Foreman 400 and a dozen more of high-performance vehicles.
