The Top 10 Breakup Songs

Whether you’re stark raving mad, want to wallow in it with a side of fries or talk dirty about your ex’s size, these songs will do the trick.

So, hit the download sites, strap on your I-Pod and let the healing begin.

1. Fallin by Alicia Keys

This song is relate-able to nearly anyone—even if you aren’t sporting braids and beads while belting it out at the piano in the middle of the street like Miss Keys did in the music video. As she explains in the song, it’s about falling in and out of love with someone, “How do you give me so much pleasure and cause me so much pain?” Whether you’ve gotten in a small argument with your lover or you’re getting over a breakup, this ballad is a great song to sing in the car.

2. The Sign by Ace of Base

No, she’s not singing about a street sign. This is a song for the one who left the relationship and isn’t turning back. “I am happy now living without you, I left you.” Unlike most breakup songs, this tune is upbeat and happy and will surely get stuck in your head.

3. Piece of my Heart by Janis Joplin

Now here’s a woman who knows her worth! Joplin belts out the words like a woman who’s on her way out the door. “Well I think I’ve had enough, but I’m gonna show you baby, that a woman can be tough.” Pre-Spice Girls, Pre-Britney, this song’s a classic girl power must have.

4. Cry me a River by Justin Timberlake

Although Justin swears he didn’t write this song about Miss Britney, it sure seems like it! Either way, men and women alike can relate to this song. If you’ve been cheated or mistreated, this is the jam for you. “Your bridges were burned and now it’s your turn, to cry.”

5. Irreplaceable by Beyonce

How can anyone forget the intro to this song, “To the left, to the left”? While Beyonce is happily married, she somehow sings like a woman who’s been wronged and she won’t have anymore! Men and women alike can sing along to this R & B song just in time to kick out their mate.

6. There you go by Pink

This song surely isn’t for the romantics. Pink belts it out and leaves nothing unsaid. This punk-rock jam is for those who’ve had enough in their relationship and are already starting to move on. “I gotta new man, he’s waitin out back, now what, what you think about that? Cause when I say I’m through, I’m through.” Sing along to this and you’ll be ready to walk out the door.

7. Where have all the Cowboys Gone by Paula Cole

Paula hits some high notes in this unique ballad. This song paints a beautiful picture, but is a little sad, while it seems to be about a relationship over the course of a lifetime. One person in the relationship is struggling the entire time, so this is a song for those who can listen to something really heartfelt.

8. Not Big by Lily Allen

While this song has a pop-feel, the lyrics are quite serious. “I never wanted it to end up this way. You’ve only got yourself to blame.” While the song is sung by the younger generation, it can be enjoyed by all ages when you need to recharge after a breakup.

9. I will Survive by Gloria Gaynor

This song is, without a doubt, a classic women’s empowerment anthem. Of course, I’m sure some men can relate to it as well. This is a great song for anyone going through nearly any type of trouble in a relationship. Gaynor sums it up when she sings, “I know I’m still alive, I got all my life to live, and I got all my love to give!”

10. I Will Remember you by Sarah Mclaughlin

This ballad is definitely for the strong ones. Sarah sings this song from the point of view long after a relationship is over. It seems as if she’s looking back on the decent times and has come to terms with the way things are. A great song, but I wouldn’t recommend it for those fresh out of the relationship.
