Temptation is rearing its ugly head again - it sure enjoys the holiday season in tempting us to eat far too much and too many of the wrong things. Here is some advice on not going overboard. Shopping for food should take place in the grocery store or the supermarket as these are the places where you will find all the healthy food options. Convenience stores are not great on choice as regards healthy nutrients! The new dietary guidelines just out tell us that we should be aiming for NINE portions of fruit and vegetables - it was FIVE before ! That is bad news for poorer Americans as they would have to spend up to 70% of their total food budget if they were to take any notice of the gurus. So, you are invited to dinner. Start before you go out. You can drink a glass or two of water (zero calories and do not wory about water retention). You will feel a little full and you can also eat a handful of nuts - the fibre in these will make you feel full and you are going to eat less. Now you are at dinner. Wine and food are flowing - it seems that a war is going to start and there will be rationing soon ! As regards alcohol, I try to have a glass of wine and then follow it with a glass of water - by doing this I can cut my alcohol consumption by 50%. When getting my wine glass replenished I try to stop my host from filling it - the less the better in this case. If I am buffet grazing, I always try to take very small helpings and then find a seat and preferably away from that tempting table! I try to find someone who I know and I will have to tell him/her a lot of things. Takes my mind off my food. The whole process of going to get second helpings is going to make me think twice about it. Stuffing, gravy, bacon, sausage and ham are all plentiful in calories. I try to just have a taste of the stuffing and then try to go for cranberry sauce (great source of antioxidants). Hoping there will be green vegatbles, I will also go for those. i do not mind piling my plate high with these. Another tip is to sip wine and eat slowly- this I find very difficult but it does work! Sweets and desserts tend to be even more tempting especially if you have a sweet tooth. Just look at the amount of calories in a piece of pecan pie with full fat whipped cream - 700 ! That is half your daily amount of calories. A piece of pumpkin pie with no cream is a much better solution. Don't bother with doggy bags - they will prolong the agony ! The average American is about to put on FIVE more pounds over the holiday season from now until New Years. Try and follow my advice and don't be one of them !
