Tips for Baking Perfect Fish Recipes

You might be dying to try out a tasty haddock recipe or some mouthwatering tilapia fish recipes and one of the best ways of cooking fish is baking it. Baking fish is not complicated but there are a few handy tricks and tips to know, to ensure you get the very best results.

Baking cooks fish quickly at a high temperature and you can bake fish fillets, steaks, whole fish, or seafood.

Baking is a very popular method for cooking fish but a lot of people worry about their fish drying out in the oven. If you leave it cooking for even a few minutes too long, the fish might turn out dry. Fish contains natural oil and if you cook it too long, this oil is removed. You need to check the fish quite often while is cooking and know how long to cook it and at what temperature. Also, remember that fish continues to cook a bit more after you have taken it out of the oven.

Choosing and Preparing Your Fish

When you purchase a fish, there are a few things to look out for here are just a few. The gills should be red or pink and the eyes should appear bright, clear and be slightly protruding. If the gills are gray and the eyes are pink, cloudy, or sunken, it is stale and you should choose a different fish.

In order to get the best results from your baked fish recipes, you need to make sure the fish is defrosted properly. You should defrost the fish on the lower shelves of the refrigerator for 8 to 12 hours.

If you want the fish to be defrosted sooner, you can place it in cold water and add 3 to 4 tablespoons of salt. Then it will defrost in a couple of hours. Defrosted or fresh fish in the refrigerator should be used within 24 hours for the best fish recipe results.

Depending on what kind of baked fish recipe you are making, you might want to marinate the fish fillets in salt and lemon before cooking for firmer flesh, a fresh taste and to make it easier to handle. You can also soak your fish in water with vinegar before baking, to make it sweeter, more tender and hold its shape better.

Baking Your Fish

Fish contains natural oils so it is not necessary to add fat or oil before baking. These natural oils will keep the fish moist as long as you do not overcook it. To make sure the fish remains moist while cooking, you might want to top it with some thinly sliced vegetables or seasoned breadcrumbs. There are plenty of tilapia fish recipes, which use vegetables or breadcrumbs to add texture and taste. Alternatively, you can brush some oil or melted butter over the top of the fish before cooking.

The general rule with fish baking is to bake the fish for 10 minutes for every inch of its thickness. 450F is a suitable temperature for most baked fish recipes. Unless the fish is an inch or less thick, you should turn it half way through the cooking time.

Tuck thin ends underneath to make sure the fillets cook evenly. Cooking times also vary depending how dense the fish is. Your fish is ready when you can flake it easily with a fork at its thickest point, when it is 145F internally or when it is opaque all the way through.

To stop fish sticking to the baking dish, you can place it on a bed of onions, celery, or both. This makes the fish stay in one piece when removing it from the baking dish and gives it some extra flavor.
