Tips for Building Stairs By Learning From My Mistakes

By: Jessica N

Alright, so I just had my stairs built by a cousin of mine who is supposed to be 'a whiz' with carpentry. Unfortunately, there were some hang ups. I really didn't want to say something that would make him feel bad or embarrassed, but really! In the end I had to take down what he made and learn the art of building stairs myself.

With what I paid him, it was no longer in my budget to hire a professional. I have some tips to share based on my learning experience.

- Before you start, check and make sure that building stairs doesn't violate any local codes or requirements. I was lucky enough; my cousin didn't do this, but I haven't had any problems here.

It was probably the only area, but that could be because the code inspector didn't see the stairs. Had he seen them, a whole new section may have been written!

- I am no expert, but I believe in quality materials. My cousin, on the other hand, worked with the cheapest stuff he could get. He simply reasoned that since the stairs would be covered with carpet, there was no need to 'go all out.'

Well, I learned that cheap wood with knots and imperfections are more likely to crack sooner than other woods. I have kids, and that's a risk I can't afford to take.

- Drawing up a blue print is one thing that can really help you focus and get organized. That was one of the best things I learned about building stairs. You'll get to see what the final result will look like, and you'll know if everything adds up right.

I hope these tips help you finish your stairs the correct way, and without any glitches. This way, you don't have to spend more money than needed. Oh, another word of advice: Don't hire relatives to build stairs for you!
