Turn Marketing Upside Down – Online

By: Ron Porter

The Internet turns traditional marketing on its head. If you think in terms of physical business vs. virtual business, you get a far bigger bang for your buck on the Internet. But it's not just vendors who are obtaining sales on the Internet. Web-based manufacturers can find brand new customers in places they never dreamed of, simply by going online and making their products available to the at-large Internet audience. For some, the sky is the limit.

Businesses of all sizes continue to tap into the Internet to sell products, services, vacations, as well as to communicate with their customers. But according to web marketing experts, the Internet advantage goes to the smaller-sized businesses. These half-pints beat the big dog when it comes to going online. The relative low-cost of getting a site up coupled with this highly flexible marketing channel means it’s easier than ever for the little guy to get a bigger piece of the action. Many small entrepreneurs discover the market potential for their niche is larger than they expected, sometimes too large. The World Wide Web’s ability to bring unexpected customers to them at a far lower cost than old-school marketing has inundated many a small business.

Search engine marketing, which includes innovative approaches for improving a website's occurrence on an assortment of search engines, represented a $5.75 billion industry in 2005, up 44 percent from a year earlier, according to the Search Engine Marketing Professional Organization. While much of that expenditure went for pay-per-click advertising, more than four out of five marketers also reported using search engine optimization, which can be achieved through careful Web site design and content.

The low-cost nature of online marketing today has facilitated the rapid growth of many start-ups, without the need for piles and piles of venture capital or other outside investment, ultimately boosting their likelihood of success, according to experts in online marketing. Today's web-based entrepreneurs are underscoring success as they grow. Fueling the growth are new products and services created by smart businesses owners after listening to their customers and the complaints of their competitors’ customers.

The opportunity to get your product in front of millions has never been more affordable.
