Weight Loss Dietary Supplements - Know What You Are Taking

By: Adrian Fletcher

What images do weight loss dietary supplements conjuror up in your mind ? Do you know how they work ? Or what affect they will have on your weight loss quest. Will they have a positive or negative affect or have no affect at all? People who are looking for a quick and easy solution to weight loss often consider over the counter supplements but the truth is there is no quick fix cures.

As part of a weight loss plan, people add weight loss dietary supplements to a diet and exercise program in an effort to kick start the process. In most cases, dietary supplements are a concoction of herbs, plants, amino acids, and vitamins. Before you add some thing like this to your diet you should generally check with your doctor. Some of these ingredients may be things like caffeine or the like. The aim being to speed up the metabolism.

This last piece of advice is prudent as many supplements do not have Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval. They are not regulated in other words. They do not meet the criterai by which other medicines are deemed suitable. Indeed, the FDA can force companies to remove a product from the market if evidence is found showing that the product is not fit for human consumption.

Ephedra was a well known example of a popular weight loss dietary supplement that was discontinued. This was after stories surfaced that it led to seizures, increased blood pressure, lead to depression, and was linked to chronic headaches. The label on many supplements may not accurately reflect their ingredients, since the FDA does not regulate these pills.

Ever since ephedra was recalled from the market, bitter orange has been touted as being safe although its effectiveness has been unproven. Its effects on the body may be similar to those of ephedra. Bitter orange as a weight loss dietary supplement has not yet been recalled, although it has been shown to be unsafe and unhealthy.

Guar gum and chitosan are two weight loss dietary supplements that have not seen any positive results on weight loss. Using either of these products has generally been discouraged. Primarily, this is because there have been no tests or studies regarding the long term effects of the ingredients. It is known, however, that neither has proven effective in either appetite suppression or helping with weight loss.

Two weight loss dietary supplements that have proven effective for weight loss are St. John's Wart and green tea. Taking these supplements has shown to increase the metabolism and thus burn more calories without resorting to exercise. Of course they do not replace exercise as a means to lose weight. They are also thought to suppress appetite. The best way to use them is to combine them to a diet plan and as part of regular exercise. Green tea is available in pill form, as a patch, or as a drinkable tea.
