What Defines Beauty In The Modern World?

By: Beau-Xpert

The latest advertisements, such as the Dove 'Beauty Campaign' are proof that there exists today a debate in the society over who has the correct view of beauty. The competitors, claims Dove, have the wrong concept of it and must not be allowed to get to ones children.

The issue at the core is - who defines beauty? and should the media have such an influence on a fragile psyche and be given the liberty to define such subjective issues?

There are primarily three philosophies that deal with this matter:

1. Beauty 'evolves' over time as the society's ideas change - There are three problems with this:

a. What is the source of the change? If it is a small group of people claiming something specific, then this is no different than racism. This is exactly the view that majority of the media outlets endorse and believe in.

b. The effects of this 'change in perspective' is promoting depression, unhealthy habits, and even suicide.

c. The issue is not as much beauty, but what is desirable that this idea promotes. When a scantily clad woman with no morals or brains appears on the screen, the message being sent is not about beauty, but rather about self-worth.

2. The concept of beauty is the same as before, but is now out in the open due to technology - While this has some shades of truth to it, there are debatable aspects to this too:

a. Who is the one exploiting and bringing this into the public? Again, as with the previous idea, the supremacist attitude of a select few dictates what goes, not what is true.

b. It does not make sense why impossible figures and ideas of beauty would come into being when it never existed before. Airbrushed images, and impossible angles on the cheekbones are a modern phenomenon, hence, they are not 'beautiful', but are rather marketed as such.

c. While there are aspects of this that are true, such as obesity, wrinkles and skin blemishes always being considered a certain way, this small definition cannot be applied across the board.

3. Subjective opinion of each individual - This is currently regarded to be the best possible explanation. Following are the discussion points related to this.

An obvious implication of this view is that every person desires to be 'more beautiful', but for a certain someone, not for everyone in the public. This makes sense in the context of marriage, for example, where a husband and wife try to be as pleasing for each other as possible.

Hence, it is perfectly reasonable to seek to fight the natural enemies of 'good' appearance such as wrinkles and blemishes through safe and healthy means. However, to place this in a position where it dictates one's life to the full is simply unacceptable.
