By: Nathan James

Are you one of the many people who unfortunately is affected by acne? If so, you are probably looking for a way to treat it. Medications can be very effective in treating acne- we'll discuss some of the prescription treatments which are available for use.

You can access prescription acne treatments through a dermatologist or your doctor. There is a wide variety of types available, which fall into the topical or oral categories. The available types are:

Topical Antimicrobials Topical Retinoids Oral Antibiotics Oral Contraceptives

Clindamycin is the name of the most commonly used topical antimicrobial mediation. It is used to treat mild to severe acne, and helps minimize and get rid of the papules and pustules associated with the condition.

Tretinoin is the name of a topical retinoid medication. It is commonly used to treat mild to severe inflammatory acne by unclogging skin pores. It prevents both whiteheads and blackheads. Unfortunately, this medication can irritate the skin and cause increased sensitivity to the sun. If using topical retinoids, is important to follow advice from your doctor and protect yourself from the sun. This type of medication is derived from Vitamin A.

The most severe cases of acne (and sometimes moderate cases) are treated by oral antibiotics. They are designed to decrease inflammation and acne bacteria. Always use antibiotics as directed by your doctor, and use caution to avoid the risk of the bacteria becoming resistant to the antibiotics.

Oral contraceptives are more often used as an effective treatment for women and they can be used as a long term acne treatment. These work by suppressing a persons overactive sebaceous glands which are responsible for the oily skin secretions which will leading to clogging of the skins pores and then to acne. However there are some potential health risks associated with taking oral contraceptives for acne that can be life threatening and these include blood clots, stroke or heart attacks. Such health risks will be further increased if you are a smoker as well.

So it is advisable that when deciding to take any acne medicine that you should talk to your doctor first and they will be able to diagnose and suggest the right course of treatment for you.
