What You Need to Know About Old School Porn

If you are into old school porn, you probably know about the classics like Boys in the Sand and Deep Throat. But do you know about the history of old school porn, and how it has shaped the face of the culture that we enjoy today? Although the images and videos are hot, the history of what it took for porn to be socially acceptable is just as interesting as the porn itself.

Back before the 1970s, old school porn was definitely being produced. Even porn of the gay variety was made. However, it was completely illegal to buy, sell or produce obscene material, a category that all porn fell into. As a result, the old school porn was sent underground and distributed on the black market. To be able to buy it, you would have had to known somebody who knew somebody. Otherwise, you would have to flip through the back pages of weird magazines looking for encoded ads (which may have turned out to be a police sting).

Back before it was legal, old school porn was peddled out of seedy motel and hotel rooms by traveling salesmen who were shady, at best. Always afraid of being caught and sent to jail, the sellers of old school porn were extremely paranoid and were obsessed with staying at least one step ahead of the police, who were almost always on their trails.

It was not until the 1960s that old school porn finally caught a break. In MANual Enterprises vs. Day, the United States Supreme Court ruled that photographs of nearly nude or even completely nude men were not to be considered as obscene. Because of this ruling, the United States Postal Service was required to end its ban of delivering such items. Suddenly, there were pictures of nude men in all kinds of different magazines.

Old school porn before the 1970s consisted largely of images in magazines. Because of the social stigma that came along with coming out of the closet, many men chose to hide their homosexual desires. Because of this, it was not possible to go into a store and purchase a gay old school porn magazine. Instead, men would pick up beefcake magazines, which featured athletic men flexing and posing without any clothes on. This way, men were able to pass it off as though they were interested in the fitness aspect of the magazines.
