What is Romance?

Romance has played a meaningful role in society throughout all civilization, even though the word has held a variety of connotations over the times. Ancient philosophers, like Plato and Socrates, often deliberated on the meanings of romance while novelists, composers, and sculptors examined the emotion in their works. Even in present times, the concrete meaning of romance stays an unsolved puzzle and is often debated and investigated by contemporary psychologists and doctors. Present day musicians and illustrators continue to explore the emotions of romance as well.

A common definition of romance is a powerful emotion of attraction, adoration, and love within a close interaction. Not too long ago, romance was rarely affiliated with marriage, especially in societies that believed in arranged unions, but romance and romantic partners have been evident throughout history. Investigations of various romances over the course of the ages have shown many common traits found in each relationship. People who are romantically involved generally express a genuine desire to share their time and rely on the other for their own contentment. The initial excitement between a couple is generally the foundation for any romantic involvement.

Romance is a complicated topic that is difficult to explain and even tougher to control, yet it happens so effortlessly. Today, romance usually refers to that beginning desire that creates a relationship. Modern romances can include brief, passionate relationships, but are commonly long lasting vows of commitment through matrimony. Even though most romantic relationships are sexually charged, romance is not actually associated with sexual pleasures. Romance is about the emotions and sensations one person has for the other and their efforts to make their lover feel the same fervency and extreme love instead of emphasizing bodily gratification.

To a number of people, romance is a dreamy love that can never bring ultimate pleasure, but others concur that without romance, no relationship can last. Romance is the hunger that drives lovers to place their significant other above all else, making them feel like the most important person in the world, something that can be achieved in a number of ways.

The question, “What is romance?”, can be replied to hundreds of different ways. Some think that romance is a a quiet walk along a deserted seashore, while others prefer a quiet evening at home, sipping hot cocoa in front of the fireplace and eating rich chocolates. Romance may even be defined as simply a genuine showing of true love.

A person‘s upbringing, their gender, and many other aspects influence their opinions about romance, but throughout history, societies from all over have regarded romance to be the single mystery that is impossible to solve, yet immensely captivating to explore. Romance is the desire that distinguishes humanity.
