It's easier than you think, just get them an cool, real cosplay outfit! Here are the main components to a typical cosplayers wardrobe:
Main Costume
Every character has an outfit that they usually wear, such as a blazer, big robe, blouse, dress, military uniform, school uniform, kimono or whatever.
Headgear
You'll find that many of the popular anime characters have some sort of headgear, it can be a set of ears, a cap or hat, goggles or glasses, helmet, headband etc. Big wigs are also popular to help replicate a character's style.
What about accessories?
Almost every character has a sort of typical accessory, whether it's a glove, sunglasses or belt.

Jewelry is often worn, even by many male anime characters. It can be brooch, special ring, earrings, chain, pendant, charms, bracelets etc.
Facial
Many character's have a typical facial look. Whether it's a certain skin tone, makeup style, stripes, swirls, design or something else entirely. Make-up or a mask may be needed to replicate these features.
