Whats Behind America's Love of Football

One of the most popular team sports in the United States is football. Their version combines soccer and rugby and wasn't played until the nineteenth century. Millions of spectators and thousands of players participate in football games every year.

Football in the US has a culture all its own. In high schools football is the center of much of the student activity; everyone comes out to cheer on their school's team, the homecoming games and dances are almost bigger than prom, and the football quarterback is typically the most popular boy in school. It's almost an institution.

American football is a complex game with numerous rules and regulations. For those who are not football enthusiastic, they may find the game boring and weary. The strategy a team adopts is more important in football than just running and eluding the opponents while scoring. It takes years and years of study to chalk out the strategies to win. Often the credit does not go to the coach and the assistants, as the players snatch the limelight attributed to their on-field performance.

Professional football began way back in 1895 in Pennsylvania. Within the next ten years more teams emerged and colleges started creating football teams as well. The American Football Association formed in 1920, but two years later became known as the National Football League.

The NFL and football are very popular in the US and has given many superstars and celebrities to American Football. The Super Bowl is one of the biggest attractions on television, as it is the finals for each season of football. It attracts millions of spectators even from Canada.

Television commercials are a big part of the draw of the Super Bowl game. The networks charge their advertisers millions of dollars for a few minutes of air time. The elaborate and star-studded half-time show is also a major event. Thanks to the recent "wardrobe malfunction" it will probably be more popular than ever.

Many wonder why football is so popular in the United States. Some attribute it to the violence. The tackles can be so rough that players often end up with debilitating injuries. People also often enjoy anticipating the next move in the game. Those spectators who have played at some time in their lives like to imagine what strategy they would invoke in any given situation. Another popular pastime during games is to yell at the coaches anytime a play goes wrong.

Football has turned into an attractive professional sport. It is as popular as baseball and hockey. Canadians play a different style of football which has slightly different rules from the one played in the US. But it is not as popular as it is in the US.

Football is introduced to many when they are just small children and it's not just a game for boys anymore. Girl's teams are sprouting up all over the place and are proving that any gender can play any sport, and play it well.
