When Overweight Threatens

By: Able Appanti

Overweight or obesity is much more than a cosmetic problem. If left uncared, it could easily evolve into a life threatening proportion. For example, a recent analysis of the healthcare statistics relating to various diseases such as cardiac problems, hypertension, sleep apnea and diabetes has found out that thousands of such cases have its roots in overweight or obesity. The message it leaves is very simple and straight - checking one’s weight very much helps in keeping off from such healthcare issues to a larger extent.

Obesity can happen due to two reasons, hormone imbalances and uncontrolled diet. If it is the former case, then one may need some specialist treatment to balance the hormone levels. But in 95% of cases relating to obesity, it happens due to over eating or following an unbalanced eating regime. The interesting aspect in the whole subject is that most people are educated these days and they know exactly what would happen if the cholesterol level is left to build unchecked. But, most of them, when it comes to devouring the exotic of victuals, tend to turn a blind eye towards all their wisdom and health knowledge for the sake of a good meal. Once or twice it can be excused, but continuously following such an unbalanced diet could spoil the party for anybody who is a human being.

So, if you are serious about shedding those extra kilos, the action plan to chart is quite simple. Reduce the calorie intake and burn down those extra calories already in the body through a punishing exercise regime. The first part of the action plan – reducing the food intake – is in fact the easiest of suggestions to make and the most difficult one to implement. After all, in a way, we all are addicted to our food and hence it will take a lot of effort mentally to turndown a sumptuous meal.

The term balanced diet can be a bit of a confusing concept. As Einstein said in his famous Theory of Relativity about the non-absolute nature of time, a balanced diet is also not absolute. It varies from one person to another and what one thinks is an optimal diet for him/her may not be a balanced combination for some one else and vice versa. Hence, rather than following any solid rule, it would be prudent from a person’s part to chart a diet that is best for his appetite and body. But, as a general tip, drink lots of water and incorporate raw vegetables, fruits and fibrous foods into the menu, meanwhile discarding milk fat and other junk foods.

On top of the newly charted diet, follow a punctual workout timetable, half an hour either in the morning or evening, according to one’s convenience. Physical exercise is vital in burning out those unwanted calories.

Yes, it can be hard work – both physical and emotional – to shed those extra pounds gained over the years through hard eating. But the result it yields is worth the effort spent. As the adage suggests, health is wealth. And a healthy mind stays only in a healthy body. Let ‘eat less and stay healthy’ be your motto!!
