Remove the Compatibility Mode Setting in Windows XP
You need to locate and open the folder on the drive on which Word is installed:
drive:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice
Right-click on Winword.exe, and then click on Properties.
Click the Compatibility tab, click to clear all the check boxes, and then click OK.
If you still face this problem, you can follow these steps to temporarily rename the default or Normal .dot template to check if it is the reason for this problem. For this, you need to
Close all the programs.
Click on Start, and then on Search.
Click on All files and folders.
In the All or part of the file name field or box, type Normal.dot.
Click on My Computer in the Look In field or box.
Then Click on Search.
On each detail of Normal.dot, right-click on the file, click Rename, and then type OldNormal.dot.
Close Search Results, and then start Word.

You will be able to overcome the above mentioned problem by following these procedures. If the problem still persists Word files may be corrupted or damaged.
