When to start using Creatine (Part 2)

By: Mick Hart

So what age should I wait until? And why? In my opinion I would say about 21. When you are a teenager, boys will have a naturally high testosterone level anyway, which is why we see growth spurts at that age in males. At that age the body is not fully matured. Bones, muscle tissue, internal organs etc are all still undergoing their natural maturity.

Taking exogenous anabolic steroids and other hormones too young can play absolute havoc in the body during this delicate time of development. The main problem is that they can cause premature sealing of the epiphyseal bone closure process which consequently means you will not grow as big as your genetics could allow you. You can actually get a test done to see whether your growth plates have sealed yet. Usually it is safe to say around 21.

During the development stage the antigonadotropic effects of steroids are alot more noticeable. And although we do know that hpta (hormone axis) recovers in Adults, it is unclear in Teenagers. It could lead to permanent low levels of testosterone as a result of taking exogenous sources at 15 when your hpta is yet to become fully operational. It is quite apparent that natural testosterone levels are higher at 21 than they would be at 15.

When I began to train at 15, I was aware that some friends were on steroids, but I opted for the natural route. Like most newcomers I was ignorant when it came to taking steroids and had only the normal horror stories like you do on TV. So I continued with every type of natural supplement I came across, but as I reached 18, I began to talk to some of the serious bodybuilders at the gym.

They told me some of the basics but I decided I wanted to know more. If I was going to use steroids then I wanted to do it safely. I bought the magazines and would search out for articles on steroids although at that time there were very few. I think Mick had only just started writing in Muscle mag at the time. I also talked about it with my father who is a Clinical Biochemist, just to get an unbiased opinion. He was in fact very helpful (and still is today).

I decided that the wise move would be to wait until I reached 21 in order to maximise my bone growth potential and at the same time avoiding any other irreversible damage. I was just under 6 ft at the time and it was hard too watch younger kids gaining muscle without hardly any effort at all, but I knew they were already juicing.

So there I was, training at least 10 times harder than the rest but with a resolute determination to get big muscles in the long term rather than with the help of alternative supplements. I knew my time would come, so I just kept my head down and spent the next three years training hard and carry out as much research as possible. I got some excellent advice from Mick's Layman's Guides, The Anabolic Reference Guide and the couple of books out by the late Dan Duchaine. Coming soon Part 3
