Who's Diagnosing You? - Get A Physicians Background Check

By: Matt A. Thomas

You'll want to do a doctors background check on the person that you've chosen to diagnose and treat your illnesses. You want to make sure that the person behind the stethoscope is the person they say they are.

You've chosen your doctor carefully - or have you? By running a doctors background check you can make certain that your physician has the skills and reputation in the areas that you're interested in.

When conducting your doctors background check you need to be very up front with your doctor about checking into his or her background and history. Most doctors will not mind this. After all, they should not have anything to hide. A doctor who is hesitant or irritated about the impending background check is probably not a doctor that you would feel comfortable with anyway.

A physicians background check includes:

* The doctor's training and education

* Any awards the doctor has received

* Articles the physician has had published

* Any hospital or academic appointments

* Any special expertise

* The affiliations with which the doctor has a membership

* Board certification status

* License status in each state

* Evidence of professional misconduct

* Their doctor credential ratings

* Court judgments (nationwide) regarding any malpractice proceedings

* Any disciplinary action against them anywhere in the nation

Also, know that there are many folks who will bring their doctor to court when things don't go positively for them. Even though the physician performs admirably and has done nothing wrong, the odds of him being sued during his career are very good.

There is a very good chance that your doctor has at least one malpractice lawsuit on their record. However, if there are a great quantity of lawsuits against them, you will probably want to move to another physician.

Your time is probably well-spent by performing a general background check of your doctor by yourself before going through the effort of an extensive background research.

Make time to sit down and talk with each of your doctor candidates before committing to any one of them. You're in the drivers seat here - you don't need them, they need your business.

Before agreeing to an exam, ask to meet with each doctor you are considering working with. Sit down with each doctor individually and interview them. Ask them anything that comes into your head. There is no such thing as a stupid question when you are interviewing your potential doctor.

Ask the doctor for both professional and patient references. Check with the patients to see what kind of experience they have had with the doctor and check with the colleagues to verify they view the doctor is qualified.

Chat with a few locals in your town to see what they think about the doctors you're considering. This can often provide great insights into how a doctor really treats his patients rather than relying on a hand-picked list of patients provided by a doctor who's looking to expand his practice.

Verify that your candidates are telling the truth by making a list of questions that will be provided on a detailed background check and then, during your interview, asking them each of the questions. Jot down what each of them told you and then verify that it's the same information that shows up in your extensive background research.

If you find that there is a difference between what the doctor told you and what has been reported, contact the reporting agency. It's okay to get further information from any person listed on the background check.

Physicians have a reputation for having huge egos. That's okay as long as you feel comfortable working with them. If you don't feel comfortable, look for a new doctor.

Choosing the doctor that is right for you is very important. By having on paper the background checks of your candidates for doctor, you can more clearly see the pros and cons so that you can make a choice you're comfortable with.
