  • Sam Walton: World's First & Finest Social Networker
Wal-mart founder Sam Walton and i have walked similar paths, both geographically and in spirit. I am by no means league, but I, geographically walk down the same streets, paths, fish in the same fishing spots, and other activities. You see, Sam Walton and his family grew up down the road from where I now live, in the Ouchata Mountains of Arkansas. There may not be a more beautiful place on the planet. I have been here for almost a decade.
  • 40 Years Of The Internet: And How It Changed Our World
Whether we realize it or not, we have just gotten past, successfully, without pitting our country, north and south against each other, as we did in the Civil War, another "Industrial Revolution". No, not exactly like the experience of our forefathers and mothers, but we have gotten through and are right "in the thick" of the Technology (Especially IT...Internet Technology) Revolution. Remember, that paper thing thrown at your door? Oh, sure. It was called a newspaper. Most of us still subscribe (out of habit) but mainly to see hometown "goings-on", and compare it to the REAL news on our Internet. But do we sit down in our recliner and read it anymore? I don't think so. "Skim quickly" is a more appropriate term.
  • Laughter And Cardiovascular Health
Laughter being good medicine sounds cliche, of course. It may, or may not be the best, but modern medicine now knows it is very good for you. If not the best, certainly close to it...at least for your heart. Research shows that mental stress can restrict blood flow to the heart. But now a study has linked laughter to increased blood circulation. Laughter appears to cause the tissue inside blood vessels to expand. Medical science feels that laughter may be important to enhance the health of your heart.
  • Trends Show Retailers Going Green Rising To The Top
As I predicted in an article several years ago, retailers, including the big guys, have gone eco-friendly. I saw it coming. I wrote about it. And, of course, it is a welcome change. The Ralph's, Targets and Sams Clubs of the world, most likely, will never go fully earth-friendly, and merely offer sections in their stores rather than become another Trader Joe's but that's alright. It's a very good sign.
  • Laughter Is The Best Medicine, But Why?
There are numerous reasons why we laugh and use humor in our lives. This impulse goes way back to the prehistoric days (I have read). Since that was a few years before my time (but unfortunately not too many years before my time), I will have to take archaeologists word for this phenomena. I remember loving to laugh as a child. My mom was the "sense of humor proprietor" of our home, and making her laugh, was especially fun, as she was a tough audience. Especially when I was in trouble, which was a majority of the time.
  • When Old Hippies Go Green
A lot of my friends and relatives know I am trying to go green. This is really not my first stab at it. I started recycling many years ago, and other than taking organic vitamins and trying my best to eat natural foods, that was about as far as I went.
  • Self-esteem Can Do Wonders For Your Self-esteem
Self-esteem can do wonders for your self-esteem. I know you probably are going to go back and read that first sentence to make sure I worded it properly.
  • How Gary Larson (the Far Side) Influnces Me
I can drone on and one regarding Gary Larson's Far Side. Just a few humorists who had a great impact on my life before I launched Londons Times Cartoons. Most were movie and television actors, and only two have been cartoonists. Larson was the major influence and continues to be. The others were comedians and actors such as Steve Martin, Mike Myers, Steven Wright, Red Skelton, Jack Benny, Billy Crystal, Dana Carvey, Peter Sellers, and and others of whom I cannot think of at the moment. One other cartoonist was the late great Charles Schulz, and they all influenced me in a different way.
  • How The Internet Leveled The Playing Field For The Disabled
The system labeled me disabled in 2001. I was thought to have depression. I did feel depressed, but never felt that was the real problem. I turned out to be right. But it took a long time to prove it, and a very astute medical community.
  • Happiness: As Good As It Gets
Recently a friend sent me an email asking me my secret to happiness. It took me by surprise as I didn't have an answer. I can remember a time in my life when my moods would swing, I had depression, but I was treated and do not live with that now. But happy? I wouldn't exactly call it that.
  • America's Continued Love For Pink Flamingo Collectibles
Pink Flamingo collectibles are either totally loved or completely ignored. Of course all this depends on taste and subjectivity. Some consider it art as others consider the pink flamingo worthless. The popularity of the pink flamingo as a decorative object dates back to the 1940's a company called Union Products in a small Ma. Town called Leminster.
  • Cartoon T-shirts And Positive Attitudes
Shopping for the perfect t-shirt? Maybe it's for you. Perhaps a friend on a special occasion. Don't think tees are a great gift? Think again. 99% of Americans have a favorite tshirt and most American adults have between 16-40 designed ones.
  • Safe Online Shopping Is Like Safe Sex: Common Sense
How many more articles are going to be written on "safe internet shopping"? Well, here's one more. And its the basics. It's the basics because the basics is what you need to know, just like a store in your local mall (but a little different). Things like shipping price, security, guarantees, quality, service. Common sense things. But how do you find out when the vendor may be across the country (if not the world?)
  • Cartooning: Where Is The Money?
There was a time when a cartoonist had to be newspaper syndicated to "be somebody" (with apologies to Steve Martin in "The Jerk"). But even then, as now, the real money was not in newspapers. Besides, the chances of becoming a part of a major newspaper syndication are close to a million to one. One should just buy lottery tickets.
  • Valentine's Day Celebration Everythings On Sale But Why?
Would you believe that in ancient Rome, love was a lottery? A cruel one at that. Here's how it worked. A male teen's right to passage to the Roman God Lupercus was through a teenage girl. Each year, all the available teenage girls in the city wwere placed in a box and a male picked a name aat random. She was assigned to him for a year. It would take 8 more centuries before the church fathers put an end to it. They discovered it was a sort of celebration of a relatively unknown bishop named Valentine who had been martyred two centuries prior to the beginning of the Roman tradition.
  • Art Clock Collecting Top Ten Things To Do
You have heard the value of collectible clocks and want to start a hobby. Or maybe you are a veteran clock collector. Antiques may be your thing or the latest trend of clocks with imprinted artwork. The more you know, the more you'll save when buying. Here is a list that may help 1. Visit museums and websites that have exhibitions and inventories of clocks. Most museums hand out detailed brochures. Most new clock sellers will be able to explain the history of the artist whose work appears on the clock and where he/she stands in the marketplace. 2. Shop the Internet for clock dealers and collectors. More likely than not, they share your enthusiasm and will be glad to share information. 3.If you are unsure of of the clock's value, look up comparable clocks and what price they have sold for in the past. This will be of great help.
  • Top Ways To Enter The Humor Profession
I can't tell you the right or wrong way to enter the field of comedy or how to become a cartoonist and keep a straight face. And that's good. Don't keep a straight face. That is rule number one.
  • Getting In Touch With Your Cartoonist Within
Someone once told me there are two things to consider when thinking of becoming a cartoonist: 1. You must be funny and 2 You must know how to draw.
  • An Eastern Philosophy Look At Niche
When I was in college (the first time around), I was always told to find a niche and keep it simple. Little did I know at the time, I was learning a sound business principle. After all, there is nothing simple about Ebay, Yahoo, or Google.
  • The Secret. What Would Jung, Aristotle, Jesus Or Moses Say?
I used to debate with my former girlfriend, a woman much more socially and finally successful than me, about the business principals to success. Though she did it, like me, the old fashioned way, made a plan and worked the plan and increased organizational skills along the way, she still believes there is some mystique and "laws of attraction" to it. Of course she is a Beverly Hills attorney, I, a cartoonist and e-tailer. Since the times of EST and other "thought mills", California has been a haven for slick re-packaged ancient scrolls disguised as "NEW"-AGE. She partly buys into it. I don't buy into it at all. Let me rephrase that. I do buy into it. I just happen to know it is nothing new except more slickly packaged and worded more for the proletariat.
